Call before you dig!

Always be sure to call before you dig. For South Carolina, always call 811 before you put that shovel in the ground. It is a good idea to plan for the surveyors to come out before you start a project. It takes up to 5 business days for them to come out to mark all telecommunication lines, water lines, sewer lines, and any other items owned by the city, county, or state. Always be safe and note where these items are and ask the surveyor, if you are on-site with them, how deep they are buried.

With this last project, we called to have the lines marked and even asked the depth. The problem was a lot of items weren’t marked (property owned items) and the ones that were marked, were not the proper depth. We ended up severing a water drain pipe, water pump pipe for water, and a comcast primary line. Luckily, Comcast came out next day for the least amount of downtime. Remember to trench slowly to ensure you don’t cut something you don’t need to. Most items at this properly were less than 6 inches below the surface. We were cutting about 10-12 inches deep for safe-keeping of our conduit for future-proofing.
